Since its inception, Al-Balqa Applied University has been developing educational and training programs to serve the local and regional community through the development of specializations and specialized programs to develop the human element and educational and training centers specialized in many fields.
Maritime cadres are among the rare jobs, and the maritime market is not saturated with qualified cadres to work in the field of maritime transport in all its sectors, whether at the international or local level.
In keeping with the development plans in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and in response to the national call and the strategy of the Ministry of Transport to establish maritime colleges in public universities, Al-Balqa Applied University has sensed the importance of responding to the increasing demand from authorities and bodies that have a close relationship with the maritime transport industry, and consequently it has developed the disciplines of Bachelor of Maritime Transport Technology and Diploma of Maritime Engineering At Aqaba University College in 2013 with the aim of preparing marine cadres to work on board ships and distinguished competencies in the management and operation of ports and maritime transport works according to international standards.
As the Maritime Transport Technology Program and the Marine Engineering Diploma are designed according to the requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the requirements of the International Convention STCW78 and its amendments, and the requirements of the Jordan Maritime Authority, according to which the student obtains a bachelor’s degree in maritime transport technology or a diploma in marine engineering accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the Commission Jordanian Navy.
The Bachelor’s Program in Maritime Transport has been offered with 132 credit hours, 99 of which are specialized in maritime transport, according to the courses proposed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and STCW 78 legislation and its amendments, as the program is accredited by the Graduate Studies Accreditation Authority (Ministry of Higher Education) and the Bachelor’s program is The beginning of marine education and the first cycle of marine qualification studies.
The marine engineering diploma specialization was also offered with a number of 105 credit hours, 92 of which were specialized in marine engineering, according to the courses proposed by the International Maritime Organization IMO and STCW 78 legislation and its amendments as a start for engineering studies and the first cycle of marine engineering qualification studies.
To complement the goal of developing maritime cadres, the university in 2014 established the Aqaba Center for Maritime Education and Training as a center affiliated to a public university and as the first maritime center in the Aqaba Governorate, the only sea port in Jordan, to play the role entrusted to it by contributing to the rehabilitation and development of workers in the maritime sector at The local, regional and international level in order to develop the maritime transport sector and serve the maritime institutions and companies operating in the region by providing all studies and training courses for naval officers and engineers in coordination with the Ministry of Higher Education and the Jordanian Maritime Authority, in accordance with local and international specifications and agreements STCW78 and The Center obtained the approval of the Jordanian Maritime Authority in 2014 for marine and engineering qualification studies and a quality certificate (ISO 9001-2015) from the French classification authority BV Bureau Veritas in maritime education and training.
The Aqaba Center for Maritime Education and Training was established on 9/15/2014 as a branch of the Center for Consultations, Studies and Training. On February 17, 2020, His Majesty King Abdullah II inaugurated the permanent headquarters of the center, where His Majesty was briefed on the center’s facilities and the progress of the training and educational process, which he admired.
Training programs are implemented in cooperation with the private sector represented by the Maritime Consulting Coalition, which provides the center with qualified maritime lecturers according to the cooperation agreement signed between the university and the Maritime Consultative Coalition, in addition to providing maritime education and training services in the region. Applying IMO legislation and in accordance with the provisions of the International Convention on Standards of Training and Certification STCW78 and its amendments.
